Join us in an opportunity to gather stories, photos, and other information focusing on the last 20 years of bird conservation, the people who have made it happen, and the birds whose futures we are helping to secure. In 2010, Partners in Flight celebrates its 20th Anniversary and International Migratory Bird Day's conservation theme is The Power of Partnerships. The art and education materials will feature 20 species of birds, created by artist Bob Petty of Montana.
I was working in North Dakota in 1990, when I first heard about Partners in Flight. Like a lot of us, I thought, it's about time we had a conservation initiative for all the birds. I arranged for a presentation on PIF to be given at the annual meeting of the ND Chapter of The Widlife Society in Grand Forks. The person who gave the talk was Stephanie Jones (USFWS Denver), who later became a friend and colleague. Of course, I had no notion that PIF would become a major part of my life, beginning in 1992. That was the year that BLM hired a number of Senior Technical Specialists to oversee national wildlife programs. I got birds. Yay!
ReplyDeleteA conference on the "Conservation of Neotropical Migratory Birds in Mexico" was held in November 1993 near Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico. Among the Mexican participants who are still contributing to PIF today are Ma. del Coro Arizmendi, Humberto Berlanga, Sarahy Contreras, Claudia Macias Caballero, Jorge Nocedal, Ernesto Ruelas Inzunza, Eduardo Santana, and Rosa Ma. Vidal. I invite my Mexican friends to update and correct me!
